Honors Science Individual Assignment

You will be required to do one individual project this year. There are four components. Each one will count for a portion of your grade each quarter.

General directions:
You will need to complete one of the following activities. Each requires a written and oral component. The oral component will be the most important and the written component will be more of a guide to your oral presentation.

The History of Science:
Investigate an era of science, a famous researcher or a field of science. Tie in the discoveries with the politics, economics, and culture of the time. This assignment should also tie in to something we have learned or will learn about in class.

Modern science:
Find out what is going on now in science. Find at least three, current articles on the same topic of Science as it applies to current research.

Consumer science:
Investigate a topic relating to science that is used in the products we buy and use every day. You should incorporate topics we have learned about in class.

Read a science book:
Choose a science book (you must have approval) and read it. You will write a book review for the book and teach the class something you learned from the book.

Conduct a science investigation:
Research a question that you have about science and design an experiment to test it. Ideally this is for students who which to further their research and participate in Connecticut’s Junior Science Symposium.

As you work on each project you will need to continually be in contact with me so I may guide you in your presentation. For each assignment you should write a paper with citations. This will allow you to organize your thoughts and keep track of your sources. The length will vary depending on the category. Your main focus will be the presentation to the class.

I will need to know your activity and topic by the end of the first quarter. You should write up a proposal for me and describe what you are going to do.
Presentations will be given in the second semester, when you are ready and after you have had a meeting and approval from me.
